This article defends Olge, the author of the book "In meat we trust", as she says that society got what they asked for after demanding so much meat. Here are a few quotes from her: "As long as the demand is there, we're going to continue to have these very large industrial systems, because that's the only way to satisfy demand," "You're not going to satisfy demand with small farmers." "We want it; we want it cheaply; we want it made in a place where we don't have to deal with the sights and sounds of slaughtering animals; and we don't want it to come from factory farms."
After her book was released Olge received a lot of criticism from social media saying that she was defending industry farms rather than wanting to restore the "healthy natural meat". Although the author seems biased because she claims not to be taking sides but just contemplating what the meat industry has become, if she wrote a book about an idea she probably has some sort of opinion.
A question we can ask ourselves is which is healthier and how do we know? Is there a right or wrong meat to eat? There have some effective studies that have shown how industry made meat, is bad for our bodies. Cows are filled with hormones and fed loads of corn which isn't their normal diet. How can that kind of meat be good for us either? By eating meat filled with hormones our bodies aren't accustomed to and aren't our natural ones this alters the human body. But how much change and difference can our bodies take?
The reason that nowadays cow industry has been introduced was the number of demand for meat. As population grows there is a greater need for food to supply everyone. In some countries this wasn't allowed until recently. In France for example there was a law that stated that cow industry was not allowed and that all cow meat should be from natural grazing cows. However that law did not last long, as less meat was provided because of slower and fewer production, the cost inevitably increased. For slightly wealthier people this was not too bug of a problem but what about the poorer people? How were they able to afford meat on a regular basis and be able to have the nutrients that meat provides? With this becoming a problem they had to remove the law and start using cow industry. There are still places where they sell organic meat but it is much more expensive and therefore not available to everyone. Is that fair?
Unfair for the people but also unfair for the cows. Animals aren't often times treated the same as humans and there are reasons for that. But is it fair for us humans to alter a cows natural diet for our needs. This may sound ridiculous because, there isn't any proof that cows can notice this change in diet but i my opinion this is unethical. Cows having to live on concrete and not be able to live in pastures and eating corn isn't what we have in mind when we imagine cows. People who care about animals and want to defend their "right" this is definitely not what they have in mind.
Cows already release a lot of CO2 into the air. As we create cow industries, not only do we create more CO2 but we also create more cows who release more CO2. For people like me who care about the planet this solution of cow industry isn't a good one. Cows produce the most amount of methane in the world.
However, what are we supposed to do as population increases and there isn't enough meat for everyone to eat? Are we supposed to keep on making natural cow meat or would it be possible to find new ways to have cow meat without all the industrialisation process.
In conclusion, we can say that their are various different reasons and opinions on this topic and that it why it is so controversial. A lot of farmers have an emotional attachment to how they work and it influences the way that they feel about the cow meat that they produce. From my point of view I would want everyone to have the possibility to eat good, organic meat but at the same time as the population has increased there wouldn't be enough. I also think that we have to think of the other people who don't have enough money to buy the organic cow meat have the right to have meat that has a lower cost. However if the world could instal some sort of system that would only have organic meat, there would be less of course, so people would buy less of it and consume less of it and not everyday of the week. Although this might not sound realistic, it might be possible if people could cooperate and a well enough organised system was put in place.
